STATEMENTS OF THE PROBLEM

This
study aims to give the students, specifically the Grade 1 and so as the
teachers, a better strategy to enhance learning and a good skill in gaining
more knowledge towards the subject.  This
study also aim is to examine the effectiveness
of mother tongue and mathematical language on the performance of the primary
school pupils in mathematics, and to find out if there will be significant
difference in the performance of the students when exposed to the mother tongue
and mathematical language.

The
researchers decided to study about the uses of MTB-MLE or the Mother Tongue
Based- Multilingual Education in teaching Statistics and Probability among
Grade 11 students of the International School for Culinary Arts and Hotel
Management. The researchers aim to answer the following questions:

a)
What is the level of performance of  the Grade 11 students in the subject Statistics
and Probability, using MTB-MLE as a medium of teaching?

b)
What is the level of performance of  the Grade 11 students in the subject Statistics
and Probability, using English as a medium of teaching?

HYPOTHESIS

The students must begin their
education in the language they understand best—their mother tongue—and need to
develop a strong foundation in their mother language before effectively
learning additional languages. The learners should begin their education in a
language they understand; it will develop a strong foundation and a motivation
to attend school. In addition, it will develop their cognitive and reasoning
skills enabling children to operate in different language starting in the
mother tongue with transition to Filipino and then English. Since the student’s
own language enables him/her to express him/herself easily, then, there is no
fear of making mistakes. It encourages active participation by the student in
the learning process because they understand what is being discussed and what
is being asked to them.

They can immediately use their
mother tongue to construct and explain their world, articulate their thoughts
and add new concepts to what they already know. The use of mother tongue
enables the young learners to immediately construct and explain without fear of
making mistakes, articulate their thoughts and add new concepts to that which
they already knew.

THEORETICAL AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This
study is based on the James Cummins’ Threshold Theory. The theory essentially
has two thresholds. The first threshold is a minimum for children to reach in
order to avoid the negative effects of bilingualism. Below this level is when
children have a limited compentency in both languages. Between the two
thresholds, children are competent in one language; but are not yet able to
transfer skills between the two languages. However, it is important to note
that “the more developed the first language, the easier it will be to develop
the second language.” (Baker,2011,p.169). Conversely, the lower the compentency
in the first language, the harder it is to achieve bilingualism (Baker,2011). A
strong first language can support the development of the second language. Above
the second threshold, allows the possibility of positive cognitive effects that
correspond to the age-appropriate levels of compentency in  both languages. The extent to which Filipino determines
the effect that bilingualism will have on that student.
