First of all, consciousness is represented as our awareness
of ourselves and our environment which means that it helps us collecting
information from external sources while we are reflecting and adapting them in
our daily life. As a personal experience, while typing I had to focus on my
keyboard, now it became semi-automatic, I can at the same time maintaining a
conversation and collecting information.

Selective attention is defined as the capacity of selecting
a stimulation in front of a distraction. While driving a car my brain will use
a mechanism that helps me being attentive, especially noticing and avoiding
cars around me by differentiating the environmental stimulations that are around
