The novel starts just off the Salinas river a few miles south of Soledad, in California during the mid 1930’s. The novel is about two migrant workers named George Milton and, Lennie Small who have a big dream of owning their own ranch someday, the only problem is that no matter what George does Lennie is always getting into trouble. Lennie’s Mental disability combined with his unknown strength is the reason why their dream has not come true. If Lennie knew how to react to what he does he would of got in way less trouble than he did. Lennie’s mental capacities isn’t smart enough to react to the consequences of his actions. “Jus’ wanted to feel that girl’s dress- jus’ wanted to pet it like it was a mouse- Well, how the hell did she know you jus’ wanted to feel her dress? She jerks back and you hold on like it was a mouse. She yells and we got to hide in a irrigation ditch all day with guys lookin’ for us, and we got to sneak out in the dark and get outa the country (11). In the first chapter Lennie when up to a girl in weeds to feel her dress, she got scared and let out a large squawk then, George started yelling for Lennie to stop but instead of stopping he got scared and then he held on the girls dress tighter. “Well, that girl rabbits in an’ tells the law she been raped. The guys in Weed start a party out to lynch Lennie (42). The girl accused Lennie for rape and then the guys in Weed go after Lennie which makes George and Lennie have to flee. If Lennie knew how to react he would of let the girl and told her that he was feeling her dress and then there won’t be anyone after George and Lennie. “Well, that girl rabbits in an’ tells the law she been raped. The guys in Weed start a party out to lynch Lennie. So we sit in a irrigation ditch under water all the rest of that day. Got on’y our heads sticking outa water, an’ up under the grass that sticks out from the side of the ditch. An’ that night we scrammed outa there.” (42). This shows that George and Lennie have to flee weed before they are able to collect their paycheck. If they were able to collect there paycheck after a few more months of working they will be able to buy a ranch of their own. Lennie doesn’t know how to react when something bad happens he just freeze and holds on tighter, if he knew how to react he would of let go of the dress and told her that he was just trying to feel it and then she would of not accused him for rape. Lennie does not know what strength was capable of, In the first chapter, we learned that Lennie killed all the mice that his Aunt Clara gave him, when the mice bite him he pinches their head a tiny bit and then they die. Lennie looked sadly up at him. “They was so little,” he said, apologetically. “I’d pet ’em, and pretty soon they bit my fingers and I pinched their heads a little and then they was dead- because they was so little (9-10). Lennie doesn’t realize that he is strong enough that even by pinching the mice head a tiny bit he would be able to kill them. In chapter 5 Lennie bounced the puppy so hard that it died, And Lennie said softly to the puppy, “Why do you got to get killed? You ain’t so little as mice. I didn’t bounce you hard.” (85). Lennie doesn’t know that even when he pets or holds a animal gently he can kill due to how strong he is. If Lennie was smarter and knew what his strength was capable of his dream would of came true. After Lennie kills the puppy Lennie accidentally kills Curley’s wife just by shaking her to stop screaming. Lennie shooked her so hard that he broke her neck. “Don’t you go yellin’,” he said, and he shook her; and her body flopped like a fish. And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck (91). If Lennie knew his strength he would of not killed Curley’s wife by shaking her because, he would of shook her not as hard or yelled at her to be quiet. If Lennie was smarter and if he knew what his strength is capable of there would be no reason to flee from weed, they would of been able to collect their paychecks and doing a few more months of work they will be able to buy their own ranch. Lennie’s Mental disability combined with his unknown strength was the reason why their dream has not come true. If Lennie was smarter, knows how to react and, know what his strength is capable of he would not have been in less trouble and know how to be able to react to the consequences of what he had done. These are the three main reasons why their dream has not come true. If Lennie didn’t get in trouble by feeling the girls dress George and Lennie would of been able to collect their paychecks and sooner or later they will be able to buy their farm. If Lennie was capable of doing these three things George and Lennie’s dream would have came true.
