It is well-known that maintenance of an efficient supply chain of
vessel spare-parts, is vital to the operational activities carried out by a
shipping company (Wang & Syntetos,
2011).
It is being always difficult to provide an uninterrupted flow of required
spares without the presence of a competent freight forwarder and a shipping
agent, due to the highly erratic and intermittent nature of the spare-parts
demand. It is necessary to fulfil the need of the vessel owner by offering a
timely delivery emphasizing the 7R concept (right time, right product, right
customer, right quantity, right condition and right place) of Logistics.
Supplying spares to ships, integrates major aspects such as supply chain
management activities, supply chain services in freight forwarding,
warehousing, ship supply and marine off-shore supporting services enhancing the
necessity to manage the related activities parallely, in an effective manner (“Phoenix ECTS
Limited | Ships Spare Parts,” 2015).

In Sri Lankan context the concept of Ship Supply Services
has become more popular among the international shipping community in which
different facilities such as spare-part clearances, crew changes, landing human
remains, medical evacuation and other provisions are being offered to the
passing vessel traffic, aiding the principals to acquire the services without
getting deviated from the sea route they are sailing on (“McLarens Group of
Companies” n.d.).
Among all these diversified amenities the spare-parts supply obtains a
significant place due to its exceptional characteristics and the massive
influence enforced on the whole supply chain. Inability to provide a required spare-part at the right
time, increases the idle time of the ship resulting a considerable loss in
revenue (Hmida, Regan, &
Lee, 2013),
thus importance of locating a Distribution Center (DC) in a suitable locality
for a smooth provision of spares enabling suppliers to minimize the logistics
cost incurred in the outbound supply chain, draws the immense attention of the
stakeholders involved in the process. This particular concept is imposed to the
local shipping industry during the study, while carrying out a feasibility
analysis to select the most suitable area to locate a vessel spare-parts DC in
Sri Lanka.
